Step 2: Register for “Karbala and the Ethos of Shi’i Resistance” here

Join Jalees Hyder for a 3-part workshop on Karbala and the Ethos of Shi’i Resistance, where we will explore the origins and enduring ethos of Shi’i resistance, a framework rooted in the spirit of Karbala. Moving between history, ethics, and contemporary struggles, we will learn how a historical stance against injustice transformed into a living moral and political framework, as well as how memory is critical to sustaining collective resistance.

In Part 1 (June 21), we will cover the historical narrative of Karbala, and the way it structures a moral system based on submission vs. dignity.

In Part 2 (June 28), we will examine the ethical and philosophical foundations of Shi’i resistance, including martyrdom, sacrifice, mourning, steadfastness, and the transformation of remembrance into a political and spiritual act of defiance against oppression.

In Part 3 (July 5), we will discuss contemporary struggles rooted in the ethos of Shi’i resistance, and the endurance of Karbala in the present day. Participants will be provided with a short syllabus of anti-imperialist readings on Shi’i history.

Jalees Hyder is a Kashmiri writer and educator whose work examines empire, resistance, and moral authority across contemporary struggles. Grounded in Shi‘i political thought and shaped by lived experience under occupation, his writing explores questions of power, memory, and justice across historical and political contexts.
